Rigid-Flex PCBs are a great choice for ultra-thin packaging needs. A rigid-flex printed circuit board, as its name suggests, is a hybrid board that integrates elements from both hardboard and flexible circuits. The key advantage of these rigid and flexible circuit boards is that they can be folded or flexed while maintaining shape. While the rigid PCBs hold all the components, the flexible film connects two rigid PCBs. It is possible to create these custom boards depending on whether you want the outward or inward layers to be flexible.
Flexible circuit boards are your go-to choice when you need PCBs to offer you the freedom of shaping them into different configurations. Flex PCBs derive their name from their capability to ensure that the circuitry can be designed to fit the electronic device instead of building the device in a manner that fits the circuitry. With a malleable base material, flexible printed circuit boards are a popular choice as they offer enhanced capabilities to suit today’s complex and miniature appliances. With their design freedom, flexible printed circuit boards result in lightweight and durable products. From wearable technology to medical equipment, its use is ubiquitous as it helps retain the precision of a standard PCB while offering unlimited freedom as far as the packaging geometry is concerned.
Widely used, rigid PCBs are made of solid substrate material, ensuring the circuit board isn’t distorted. Ranging from single-layer PCBs to multi-layered ones, rigid PCBs are beneficial where they need to be set in shape and maintained during the lifetime of the equipment. Their compact size and easy maintenance make them ideal for use in a wide range of applications where the components need to be fixed and where there is application stress and increased temperatures.
As the complexity of electronic components increases, the one thing that becomes imperative is signal rates and high frequency of transmission. There is little surprise that the demand for high-frequency PCBs is rising. They find use in various high-speed design applications that require a frequency range of 500MHz to 2GHz.
A metal core PCB, also called a thermal PCB and MCPCB, differs from the traditional FR4 printed circuit boards in that it incorporates a metal material as its base. With a thermally conductive dielectric layer, the prepreg dielectric ensures that heat is transferred to the base plate. The base plate, usually made of aluminum or copper, offers mechanical integrity while transferring heat to the mounting surface or the air. Thermal management is ensured with the heat diverting from the printed critical board components.
To meet Military or IPC Class 3 specifications, a PCB must be designed from scratch as a Military Spec or IPC Class 3 part. At Mer-Mar Electronics, we have the necessary experience and expertise to undertake the design, layout, material selection, and fabrication process to meet stringent standards. Our Military PCBs are manufactured in conformance with MIL-PRF-50884, MIL-PRF-31032, and MIL-PRF-55110 standards.

Anpllo provides high-quality custom fabrication and assembly of printed circuit boards for a competitive price and turnaround time. This is thanks, in part, to our hassle-free ordering and production process. Here’s how it works.
- Quoting – You can get an quote from our website. However, if you want a more customized one, contact us! Our sales representatives will get in touch with you within minutes. We’ll need a few details from you to get your quote started:
- The number of assemblies you need
- Your bill of materials, design files, and other specific details like fabrication and assembly instructions
- Your target lead time
- Any other special requirements
- Ordering – Place your order and payment and we’ll send a confirmation immediately. Our engineers will also review your files for any inconsistencies. We’ll reach out to you immediately if there are any. If not, we’ll start.
- Receiving First Articles – First articles are a small portion of your prototype assembly order and a good way for a last double check of your design before having a whole order completed. If you would like, we’ll send up to four assembled units to you for double-checking and approval before manufacturing the rest of the PCBs. If you find any problems with them, get in touch with us. We’ll make the necessary revisions immediately.
- Getting the Rest of Your Order – Once you’re happy with the first articles or the revised design, we’ll finish the assembly of the balance of your circuit boards.

PCB Fabrication process and technology
The complete PCB fabrication process is based on the design package that makes the circuit board in physical form. Following is the process of fabrication of PCB, which starts with the design and ends with testing:
Make the Design of the board for the further process. Use it as a blueprint of your PCB. Various software is available for this; print it using a plotted printer when the Design is ready.
Create the substrate and make sure its material is insulated. Copper covers both sides of the layer.
Make sure the blueprint and real print are aligned. Hole the circuit board so that the whole Design is printed serially using photo-reactive chemicals
It shows all the paths of copper. It hardens the photoresist. Dip the circuit board in the alkaline chemical solution to remove the additional photoresist.
Dip the board in another solution, the same as alkaline, to remove the extra copper. The photoresist stays. There is no side effect on the photoresist by using the chemicals.
Now check whether the layers are aligned by seeing the holes of the layers. After this step, you cannot rectify the mistakes of the previous steps. So do it carefully.
In this process, metals hold the layers because there is a fusion between the layers. Now, there is no requirement for a copper layer. Then press all the layers using a mechanical press. Pin the layers so that they are aligned together.
If any copper remains on the layers’ inner surface, it is removed by drilling guided by the computer. A chemical solution fuses all the layers. Now you can plate the circuit board by fusing the layers using chemicals.
The outer layer of the photoresist in the board is hardened by UV rays and removes the extra photoresist. Now the board is plated with a thin layer of copper. This acts as a guard of copper to protect it from etching.
Some chemical solution removes extra copper. Plating protects the required copper from the chemicals.
Clean the board before doing the solder mask. Commonly, the green part of the circuit board is a solder mask. UV rays can remove extra solder masks, and the required ones can be placed on the circuit board.
Important information is printed on the board by this process. After that, the last coating is needed on the board.
According to the requirements, soldering is further processed to give good quality PCB. It upgrades the standards of the boards.
Electrical tests are mandatory to complete the process. An expert technician does this to test the overall quality. It is necessary to check that the boards are working appropriately or not.

PCB Fabrication FAQs
PCB Fabrication is a series of electrochemical processes for creating circuit patterns on copper through additive and subtractive methods. The process of building or assembling the raw board lays the foundation for the final PCB Assembly.
You need to provide the following files for PCB fabrication –
- PCB Gerber File Format – The Gerber file format is the defacto standard for PCB fabrication. This standard file describes the PCB layers like solder masks, copper layers, etc. You can go for either .zip or .rar when you upload your designs.
- Drill File in Excellon format. Non-plated drills are either in the board outline or in the second drill file with the text NPTH in the filename.
- Board Outline File – For routing the board edges, it has only the board’s outline, including any inner cut-outs.
The overall cost depends on the complexity of the device. The number of materials used, the manual labor work hours, required efforts, and the fabrication time is all considered for the overall cost calculation.
The turnaround time usually depends on the production quantity. Another factor that needs to be considered is the ready availability of the raw materials.
We go for conformal coating applied by dipping and spraying once the components are soldered. This ensures your PCB withstands extreme environmental conditions. This coating helps prevent corrosion or leakage currents. We usually use modern conformal coats like silicone rubber, acrylic, epoxy, etc.
We go for immersion tin line, solder mask over bare copper, fused tin, nickel, immersion gold, etc.
Up to 6 oz, Cu-based thickness is available for the fabrication of PCBs.
Yes, we offer multi-layer PCB Fabrication with dense and high-count multilayered PCB services.
Our pre-production services typically include manufacturers of 500 – 5,000 printed circuit boards per order, with delivery times generally ranging from 2 to 20 days.
